Renting a Car: A Practical BullBJ Car-Hire Guide

By BullBJ Team October 4, 2026 6 min read

Self-drive or chauffeur, insurance, deposits, mileage limits and fuel policy: everything to ask and check before you drive away with a rental from BullBJ.

A rental car can make a trip — or ruin it, if the terms were never made clear. BullBJ's car hire page lists vehicles from providers in Kenya and worldwide, from budget daily rentals to chauffeur-driven sedans. Here is how to book one without surprises.

Choose the right type of hire

  • Self-drive — you drive; you need a valid driving licence, and the deposit and insurance terms matter most.
  • Chauffeur-driven — the provider supplies the driver; price is usually per day and often includes fuel. Confirm driver costs for extra hours or days.
  • Long-term lease — monthly terms for work or projects; ask what maintenance and servicing is included.

If you just need a ride from A to B rather than a car for the day, the transport page covers taxis, couriers and movers instead.

Ask these questions before you pay anything

  1. Insurance — is the car insured, what does the cover include, and what is my liability if something happens?
  2. Deposit — how much, paid how, and when exactly is it refunded?
  3. Mileage — is there a kilometre limit, and what does an extra kilometre cost?
  4. Fuel — full-to-full, or do I return it as I took it? Who pays?
  5. Where and when — exact pickup location, and whether delivery to the airport or hotel is possible.

A provider who answers these five questions clearly is a provider you can deal with. Evasion on deposits or insurance is a reason to pick a different listing.

Check the car before you drive

Walk around the car with your phone: photograph every existing scratch, dent and the interior. Check the spare tyre, jack and any tools. Turn on the lights and air conditioning. Photograph the fuel gauge. Five minutes now settles every 'that scratch was already there' argument later.

Documents

For self-drive, expect to show an ID and your driving licence; providers may also photograph them for their records. For chauffeur hires, you typically only need ID. If you are a visitor, carry your passport — some providers require it.

Paying for the rental

Rental payments happen directly between you and the provider, on terms you agree. Confirm the total in writing — a message in BullBJ chat is ideal — including deposit and any extras, before pickup. Keep the receipt or confirmation message until your deposit has been returned.

Returning the car

Refuel to the agreed level, clear your belongings, and do the return walkthrough together: check fuel, check for new damage, agree the deposit refund on the spot, and get the confirmation in writing.

The best rentals share one pattern: everything agreed in writing before the keys change hands. Ask the five questions, photograph the car, and enjoy the drive.
